Los Angeles 1984. Nawal el Mutawakel, 400m hurdles © André Lecoq/L'Équipe 8 August 1984. On Nawal el Mutawakel's shoulders, the caress of a flag and the weight of history. That evening, the Moroccan woman won the first women's 400m hurdles at the Olympic Games. She was the only woman in her delegation until then, but she became the first Arab woman, and also the first African woman, to win Olympic gold. The 1.59m athlete, to whom a journalist asked how such a "small woman" could run so fast, went on to become a minister in Morocco, and even vice-president of the International Olympic Committee. Single later print. Edition 1/1. Printed on Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta Satin 300g paper. Flamant art frame. 40 x 60 cm
