London 1948. 4x100m relay © Collections L'Équipe 6 August 1948. The Olympic flame that had been extinguished in Berlin in 1936 before the world was plunged into the darkness of war was rekindled in London. The city was still battered by the bombings, its population rationed, but 120,000 spectators found the fervour of a stadium at Wembley, the beauty of peaceful confrontations, even if the United States beat the British in the 4x100m relay.
