Landscape II, 1966 Oil on canvas. Stamped by Maurice Wyckaert on the back of the frame and on the canvas. Dated and located Brussels on the frame. 100 x 120 cm (Small missing and lifted) Provenance: Harold T'Kint Gallery Bibliography: Gérard Berréby & Danielle Orhan, "Maurice Wyckaert L'Œuvre peint (1947-1996)", Paris, Éditions Allia, 2012, reproduced in colour under n°265. Our painting bears witness to Wyckaert's proximity to the Cobra movement (1948-1951), he was a friend of Jorn and Vandercam in particular. Here the gestural expansion and the explosion of colour are the expression of interior landscapes: the artist is indebted to Cobra as much as to lyrical abstraction, American gestural painting, oriental calligraphy but also to the Brabant landscape painters. Also an engraver, Wyckaert achieved international recognition (Jules Raeymaekers Prize of the Royal Academy of Belgium) and obtained official commissions (monumental work in the Jacques Brel metro station in Brussels). He was a brilliant intellectual and member of the Situationist International. Many of his works are kept in museums (Brussels, Ghent, Ostend, Vienna, Rome, Lausanne and Sao Paulo).
