Album page, India, 18th century
Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper
Recto : This lavish depiction of the Mughal emperor in its old age shows the conspicuously pious ruler at the end of his life. ‘Alamgir, also called Aurengzeb, is depicting holding a flywhisk, standing on its sword (talwar). A slender crescent moon set inside a thick golden solar ring symbolize the world’s harmony under the emperor’s reign. He wears a white jama and pajama, with two pearls necklaces, a silver patka (waist-sash), and sash draped over the figure’s left shoulder.
Verso : Quatrain from Hafez signed "... al-'abd".
