Attributed to the prolific translator and compiler Meusnier de Querlon (1702-1780), this little book is a rather ferocious satire of the suppers at Marly and those given by Samuel Bernard at Passy. The anecdotes, essentially sexual in nature, are said to have been supplied by Jean Monnet, the author of the Anthologie françoise, who had the work printed at his own expense.
An entire passage forms a transparent allusion to Freemasonry, its rituals and symbols - a rather early mention, as the Grand Lodge of France was only founded in 1738.
