Memoirs. Paris, Étienne Ganeau, 1724. 2 volumes in-12, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with repeated arms, inner lace, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition. Of modest origin, Jean Hérault de Gourville (1625-1703) had a brilliant social ascension and became receiver general of the sizes of Guyenne, source of a considerable fortune, and steward of the house of Condé. His memoirs, covering the years 1642 to 1698, are particularly interesting for the period of the Fronde. A copy with the arms of the Count of Hoym (1738, no. 3894), Minister Plenipotentiary of Poland in France and one of the most distinguished bibliophiles of the early 18th century. From the libraries of Robert S. Turner (1878, n°707) and Antoine Mouradian, with bookplate. Label of the Pierre Berès bookshop. Some wear to the bindings, one hinge cracked.
