Of modest origin, Jean Hérault de Gourville (1625-1703) had a brilliant social ascension and became receiver general of the sizes of Guyenne, source of a considerable fortune, and steward of the house of Condé. His memoirs, covering the years 1642 to 1698, are particularly interesting for the period of the Fronde.
A copy with the arms of the Count of Hoym (1738, no. 3894), Minister Plenipotentiary of Poland in France and one of the most distinguished bibliophiles of the early 18th century.
