In 1575 Ortelius was appointed Geographer to Philip IIº. The "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" was the first Modern Atlas, driven by the great interest in the geographical knowledge of the world. Edited in different languages, it was formed by a selection of the best existing maps at the time. It continued being updated until 1612. It presents legend in Latin below the view as well as text on the back.
