The phrase Nunc est Bibendum! is taken from Horace's odes and literally means "Now is the time to drink". This verse was taken up in 1898 by the Michelin brothers as a slogan; it thus appeared on the first advertising poster representing the Michelin man, with the addition "the Michelin tyre drinks the obstacle". The character was then naturally named "Bibendum".
These posters were intended to be displayed indoors, usually behind bars.
