NÜREMBERG (Germany) - RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL PANORAMIC VIEW OF NÜREMBERG - Pieter Van der KEERE (Petrus KAERIUS) - 17th century. "Nurenburgensus". 1619. Panorama in 4 plates, engraved with etching and burin. Ref: Hollstein, n°10. Proofs on laid paper. Published by Pieter van den KEERE (1571 1646), in Amsterdam. Small margins. Portrait of Albrecht Dürer in an oval in the upper middle of the subject (the artist's birthplace) and, in the sky, Allegories of the Four Continents. Folded. Pieter Van der Keer, also known as Peter Kaerius, son of the printer and type founder Hendric van den Keere the Younger, was a Dutch cartographer, engraver and publisher. Due to religious unrest and persecution, he fled his native country for England and worked in London as an engraver. Van den Keere's first plates can be found in John Norden's "Speculum Britanniae" (1593), which includes aerial views of London and Westminster Abbey. In 1596 Van den Keere returned to Holland and settled in Amsterdam, where in 1609 he began to publish in addition to his engraving activities. Exceptionally rare, we have not found a copy that has been sold or kept in a library or museum. 41,5 x 214 cm approximately. Condition B (some tears formerly restored, some rare foxing and printing folds, partially sunned).
