Wunderhorn. Stuttgart, Manus Press, 1970. In-folio, in sheets, publisher's brick cloth folder and case, gilt iron in the centre of the boards. English text and German translation illustrated with 36 original colour lithographs, 19 of which are out of text, by Max Ernst. This publication includes Brother and sister, an excerpt from Alice in Wonderland and a letter from Lewis Carroll to his brother and sister Henrietta and Edwin Dogson also published in 1977 in Lettres à ses amies-enfants. Max Ernst and Werner Spies chose the texts as a tribute to the British author. The Surrealists played a decisive role in the French reception of Lewis Carroll, whom they considered a precursor ancestor. Max Ernst had already illustrated La Chasse au Snark published in 1950 and Logique sans peine in 1967. Edition at 84 copies on Arches, containing a separate suite of all the color lithographs, on japon, all signed and numbered by Max Ernst, this one of the 15 reserved for the author and the collaborators, the n°VII signed by the artist. Spies/Leppien, 135 C.
