MARNE. "View of the Portal of the Cathedral Church of REIMS. Beautiful etching by François Chéreau le jeune (Paris 1717 - Paris 1755) after Martinet, depicting the main facade of Rheims Cathedral in the mid-18th century. "The portal of this church is the most beautiful in France. All the kings are crowned there. King Clovis was the first and was named Louis in 542 by Saint Remy, archbishop of Reims. The oil having failed, a snow-white pigeon was seen descending on the altar, carrying in its beak a bulb full of oil, called Holy, which was used for the Coronation of this King and which is used for all Kings without having failed until now." Engraving, About 1740. (43 x 27 cm) Condition A.
