Miniature oracle mask for a "Galukoji". Pende, DRC. Carved wood. Period: 1920/1930. H 7,5 cm. Base included: H 11 cm
Made of accordion-like braces that are both extendable and retractable, the galukoji is decorated at one end with a head or mask of wood and feathers. The addition of a face to the design of the kinetic mechanism suggests that its actions are guided by a spiritual force.
Provenance: collection of Dr Smits, Belgium.
