An Egyptian bronze ring, Ptolemaic period, circa 2nd-1st century BC, the solid hoop flat on the interior, slightly rounded on the exterior, expanding and flaring to the broad oval bezel, engraved with a female portrait bust in profile to the left, her hair pulled back and tied in a chignon, bezel 3.2 cm. wide; ring size P
Provenance: Christies London, 25 October 2012, Lot 211; Private Collection, Germany; acquired 1960-81 and thence by descent
For a similar bronze ring with female portrait head cf. G. M. Bernheimer, Ancient Gems from the Borowski Collection, 2007, p. 76, no. GF-26. In the above ring the absence of a diadem would suggest that a private individual is depicted rather than a royal portrait.
