Rome, last quarter of the 17th century. Cast, chased and gilded bronze plate representing the Lamentation (very slight casting defects, possible re-gilding). Height 21.5 cm - Width : 28.7 cm The composition of this plate is inspired by a drawing by Jan Van Der Straet (Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605), engraved by Raphaël Sadeler (Antwerp 1560 - Munich ? 1632) who reflected on the representation of the dead Christ seen obliquely from above. This Lamentation is preserved in several museums, notably in London at the Victoria and Albert museum (inv A-6-1933) and at the Musée d'Ecouen (inv Ec.2036) and models from the Lencker workshop, notably by Zacharias Lencker (? - 1612), are known to have passed through the trade. Moreover, a copy of this representation was presented for sale on 25 February 2015 at Chayette et Cheval, lot 240 and bore an interesting inscription: TABLAVQVE LE SR JACQUES GILLET A APORTE DE ROME. MT CHIRVRGIEN DE ST IACQVES DES ESPAGNOLE. A ROME 1675. In 1675 a surgeon in Rome bought a plate of almost identical dimensions, which means that this originally German representation was available in the Italian trade and could very well have been re-issued by Roman founders. The plate did in fact arouse great interest and the originality of the representation was a great success. By observing the proposed model, the very copper alloy of the bronze, the quality of the gilding, the intensity of the chasing allow us to consider a Roman production of the end of the XVIIth century.
