Nicknamed the Pseudo-Van de Venne, Jan van de Venne was only recently identified by the mention "Vinnen, peintre de Bruxelles" in the inventory of the collection of Archduke Leopold-Guillaume in 1659, as well as by several mentions of "Venne" in 18th-century inventories. Receiving his master's degree in 1616 in Brussels, he favoured religious subjects where the figures are more similar to genre scenes due to the individualisation of the faces and the recurrent representation of old men.
Usually of a more modest size, this painting stands out in the artist's output for its dimensions.
Another version on canvas went on sale on 29 June 2021 in Lisbon, at Veritas, n°37, reproduced.
