Known for his orientalist scenes, Bridgman passed through the Pyrenees in 1872. Via Gascony and the Landes, the Bay of Biscay, he crossed Spain before embarking for Tangier and Oran. From there, he painted his realistic picture for the 1873 Salon, La rentrée du maïs dans les Basses-Pyrénées.
