We thank Mrs. Ilene Susan Fort (Ph.D., F. A. Bridgman authority, and Curator Emerita, Los Angeles County Museum of Art), who confirmed the authenticity of this work and wrote the following note
The American-born artist F. A. Bridgman painted horses many times over his career as individual studies of the animal and as part of a scene, most often in his North African imagery of equestrians in an Algerian landscape, or part of the daily life of urban and small desert towns. Many of the paintings that he included in his solo exhibitions during the 1880s and 1890s may have been studies of the equine body as they were listed in the accompanying catalogues simply as "horse."
The present painting in question may have been a commission as the inscription in the upper left corner might refer to the name of a horse and its owner; unfortunately, at present Dr. Fort has been unable to identify either. Although Bridgman lightened his palette to pastel shades for some of his early 1890s canvases, the softness of the overall surface handling was not typical of the artist.
