PASCAL Blaise Thoughts of M. Pascal on religion and on some other subjects which were found after his death in his papers Paris, by Guillaume Desprez, 1670 In-12°. Full red morocco (M. Godillot). Spine with 5 nerves decorated with gilt dots, finely gilt flowered boxes. Triple gilt framing thread on covers. Double gilt thread on the edges. Lace and gilt decorations on the edges. Bound in red morocco ([Gendebien]). Very rare and sought after first edition. Only two copies of the first printing dated 1669 have been preserved. Pascal had written these thoughts on detached leaves which were gathered by the solitaries of Port-Royal. They were published by the Duke of Roannez. Our copy belongs to the 1st edition at the date of 1670, i.e. identical to the edition of 1669, except for the date and the presence of the cartoons required by the ecclesiastical censorship, with the figure of Desprez on the title, the preface of Etienne Périer, the approvals of the doctors, the table of titles, the extract of the privilege of January 7, 1667 (completed of printing January 2, 1670) with on the back the errors to be corrected, the thumbnail in intaglio on p.1 of the dome of the Sorbonne and its 365 pp. It is completely in accordance with the remarks of Maire, Le Petit and Tchémerzine in particular. A superb and very rare copy in perfect condition in an attractive binding by Godillot (Maire, IV, pp. 101-103, n°3 (Pensées) and p. 115, n°29 (Discours sur les Pensées) - Tchémerzine, V, p. 70 - Rochebilière, 117-120 - Picot-Rothschild, I, 79-80 - Le Petit, pp. 207-213)
