PALISSOT Charles de Montenoy
Small letters on great philosophers
Paris, sn, 1757
In-12°. Full contemporary marbled calf. Spine decorated. Red morocco title-piece. Triple gilt thread framing the boards. Red t. Posterior lined slipcase. First edition in which Diderot, in particular, is very badly treated. Palissot had already printed his comedy Les Originaux which had raised indignation. His Petites Lettres exasperated even more the party of the philosophers whom he mocked more by opportunism than by conviction. Interesting copy enriched with a rare autograph letter signed : "To Madame de Cape from her very humble and obedient Palissot". A copy in very good condition (crack at the head of the upper jaw and pale scattered russets).
