ADOLPHE MONTICELLI (1824-1886) SBD " INTERIEUR MERE ET ENFANTS" FUSAIN AND AQUARELLE SUR PAPIER - influenced by Eugène DELACROIX, the works of the Louvre Museum and the atmosphere of Provence, his bold and empathetic touch is close to that of DIAZ de la PENA and Félix ZIEM whose courses he followed. He died in Marseille in 1885 a few months before VAN GOGH arrived in Paris. However, VAN GOGH studied MONTICELLI's technique and experimented with this colourful and particularly expressive painting in certain works - his vases and bouquets and his search for a thick brushstroke bear witness to this, as he wrote to his brother Theo in March 1888: "MONTICELLI sometimes took a bouquet of flowers as a reason to gather on a single panel the whole range of his richest and best balanced tones.
