Andrew Baxter's copy.- Lucian of Samosata. Gnomae luciani samosatensis dialogorum selectorum libri duo Graecolatini, 2 parts in 1, text in parallel Greek and Latin, titles with woodcut printer's device, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, errata f. at end, later ink marginalia in Greek and Latin, gathering v misbound, first title little frayed at outer edge, closely trimmed at head, affecting some headlines, last few ff. nibbled at head, some staining and spotting, lightly browned, 17th century calf, upper joint split, but holding, head of spine and corners little worn, rubbed, [VD16 L 2946], 8vo, Ingolstadt, Adam Sartor, 1598. ⁂ Provenance: Andrew Baxter (1686-1750), Duns Castle; his son Alexander; and thereafter Thomas Mein of Lessudden, or St Boswell's, some 20 miles from Duns Castle (various ink inscriptions in Greek, Latin and English). Andrew Baxter came to Duns Castle in 1719, in the employ of the Hays of Drumelzier, and remained there for a number of years serving the family in various capacities, including tutor to the sons of William Hay. While there he corresponded with Henry Home about Newton, and later established himself as a metaphysician and 'one of Britain's leading exponents of Newtonian metaphysics' (ODNB).
