La Magdalena y San Miguel Arcángel / "Santa Lucía y el Santo Ángel Custodio", c. 1440-1450 Bibliography: - Benito Doménech, F. and Gómez Frechina, J., "La Clave Flamenca en los Primitivos Valencianos, exhibition catalogue, Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia, 2001, pp. 65-66, figs, 53 and 54. Joan Reixach was one of the main promoters of the Hispano-Flemish style in the Kingdom of Valencia. The strong Eyckian imprint can be seen in some of the details of these paintings, such as the armour of Saint Michael, with his stripes adorned with gems and pearls, and also in the conception of the background landscapes with hills, groves, vegetation and the walled city in Flemish style with towers, spires, rivers, boats and bridges reminiscent of those that appear in compositions by the great Flemish master. The four saints were taken from a dismantled altarpiece, perhaps from a bench, and are presented on an independent support and grouped in pairs in two frames made of Gothic-inspired carved and gilded wood. However, we know from old photographs that have survived of these same works that each pair of saints originally shared the same support, the original arrangement of Saint Michael and Saint Lucy having been altered. . Pair of tempera paintings on panel..Boards: 25 x 20 cm. each / Frames: 34 x 51 cm. each
