Two Englishwomen and the Continent. Paris, Gallimard, 1956. In-12, bradel box half dark beige half mustard following a horizontal division covering the field, except for the outer half of the first plate, in taupe box, smooth spine titled in cold, paper lining with these three colors, blue-green paper endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine, lined case half dark beige half mustard (C. Gevaert). First edition. One of 25 copies on vellum pur fil, the only large paper. Like Jules et Jim in 1962, the fame of this novel by Henri-Pierre Roché is largely due to François Truffaut's film, released in 1971, which the director considered his masterpiece. Adapting Roché's novel was also close to his heart for personal reasons: it is the only book that Truffaut took with him to the clinic where he was treated at the end of 1970 for a serious depression following his break-up with Catherine Deneuve. The credits of the film show a succession of copies of Roché's book. A very fine copy in a fine binding by Clara Gevaert.
