The aim of the journey was to establish trade relations with Russia and Persia. "The engravings show splendid contemporary views of Moscow, Isfahan, etc., and the text offers thorough accounts of political and social conditions" (Dünnh.). "With this account Olearius became a founder of the scientific description of travel" (G.-L.). In the appendix a letter of Mandelslos to Olearius from Madagascar, as well as a lamentation on the death of Mandelslos written by Olearius, both dated 1645. - Lacking gest.
