HELBARD
Austro-German, 1st quarter of the 16th century, Maximilian form.
Solid, square tip, flat towards the base, both sides with the same mark. Blade with slightly concave cutting edge. Flat beaked hook. Long langets, octagonal shaft significantly restored, shaft nails likewise.
L 225 cm.
In the Armory Inventory of Emperor Maximilian I (1502-1515), which provide information primarily about the artillery, there are also illustrations of "helbard types" that provide information about the characteristic features of Maximilian helbards. Cf. Egg, Pfaundle: Maximilian und Tirol, 1969, pp. 90/91.
