PLEURANT of the tomb of Isabella of Bourbon. Oak. Flanders XIXth century. H.59. Wife of the Duke of Burgundy, Isabella died in 1465. Her mausoleum in Antwerp contains 24 images of "mourners" representing her family and ancestors. The romantic 19th century seized upon her tragic death at the age of 29 to depict with great fidelity these mourners who accompanied her to her final resting place.
