THE RETURN OF THE TROOPS BEFORE THE STORM Paris, between 1753 and 1763
Oil on oak panel, Louis XV period frame
26 x 42 cm (with frame: 38 x 54 cm)
Provenance
Galerie Bailly, Paris
Private collection, Paris, since 2005
Even more than the previous painting, of which it forms a counterpart, this painting by Nicolas Jacques
Julliard evokes the art of Boucher, whose pupil he was from 1740 to 1749. He then travelled to Rome, from where he returned in 1753 before being appointed Painter to the King of the Aubusson and Felletin factories, for which he supplied the cartoons.
This picturesque landscape, where the whole family is busy bringing in the animals before the storm arrives, owes a great deal to his reception piece, which was presented to the Academy in 1759 (fig. 1).
The painting is presented in the same carved and gilded oak frame as the previous Roman landscape, with carved spandrels reminiscent of the work of Jean-Baptiste I Tilliard.
