Bibliography
Handwritten note by Charles Sterling that this was one of the most beautiful paintings Nicolas Jacques Julliard had done, consulted at the documentation of the Musée du Louvre in 2004
This picturesque scene of a woman hanging linen in a landscape was inspired by the views of the Roman countryside that flourished in the 18th century. Nicolas Jacques Julliard had made the unmissable trip to Rome between 1749 and 1753, but the interpretation he gives here draws as much on the art of his master François Boucher as on that of Claude-Joseph Vernet.
The panel is presented in an exceptional carved and redecorated oak frame from the Louis XIV period, whose carved spandrels evoke the work of Jean-
Baptiste I Tilliard.
