PAIR OF PAPER PRINTERS WITH CHILDREN PLAYING WITH ANIMALS Paris, Louis XV period, circa 1750-1755 Gilt bronze with leaf and mercury H. 16 cm, W. 10 cm, D. 8.5 cm Provenance Former collection of Madame Cyprienne Dubernet-Douine, Château de la Boissière Former collection of Mr Hubert de Saint-Senoch, Aix-en-Provence Former collection of Mr and Mrs Djahanghir Riahi Private collection, Paris, since 2012 This pair of gilt bronze paperweights, which has been part of the most prestigious collections, represents a girl riding a swan and a boy playing with a dog. The motif derives from a mythological theme in which two young girls, one accompanied by a swan and the other by a dog, could represent Venus and Diana as children, as in the Wallace Collection (fig. 1). The children stand on a rocky mound, whereas here they are placed on a rectangular moulded terrace. The quality of the mixed gilding, with mercury and leaf, the fineness of the chiselling of the plant motifs on which the children are resting, and above all the modelling of the figures, are reminiscent of Jacques Caffieri, the king's sculptor, founder and chiseller. Our model could be the work of his workshop. Additional information given by the collector is available by QR Code in the PDF.
