LOUIS XV PERIOD CARTEL À LA CHIMÈRE AILÉE Paris, 1746 Carved and gilded limewood, enamelled dial, gilded brass Reworked carving and enamel, restoration of the domed glass and counter-lunette, escapement and balance replaced in the 19th century H. 100 cm, W. 52 cm Movement signed "Anne Clement l'Ainé Paris", dated September 1746 on the spring Mark with crowned C on the bezel Provenance Former collection of Madame Camoin Former collection of the Marquis de Goulaine, Château de Goulaine (Loire-Atlantique) Private collection, Paris, since 1993 Exhibition Château de Bagatelle, September 1991, Le cadre et le bois doré à travers les siècles Bibliography Sophie Mouquin, Le Style Louis XV, Paris, éditions de l'Amateur, 2003, p. 71 This rocaille cartel is surmounted by an impressive chimera with outstretched wings. It points its head towards the thirteen-part enamel dial. The movement bears the signature of Anne Clément, son of the famous Parisian master watchmaker Fiacre Clément. Unlike her brothers, Anne Clément practised her watchmaking profession outside the corporate structure. After two contracts with Louis Delesprés in 1727, and then with Joseph-Joachim Bastien in 1731, he set up shop on rue du Jour in Paris. Dated 1746, the movement of our cartel is one of the last pieces he made during his short career. Its chimera decoration, of great originality, suggests that it could be a special commission.
