This bas-relief portrait of "Louis the Great,
Emperor of the Gauls", shows the profile of the King in bust, in ceremonial armor, on a pedestal with his figure. The whole rests on a console with volutes from which two laurel branches intermingle with a phylactery.
The bas-relief is carved in a wild cherry tree known as Saint Lucia wood, of a reddish-brown colour, characteristic of the Meuse forests. This commemorative object was made by sculptors from Lorraine, active in Nancy or Paris in the Foullon circle. It is circumscribed by a moulded frame, carved with a frieze of foliage dotted with flowers and underlined by a laurel cord punctuated with flowers.
