RUSSIAN MIRROR Late 19th - early 20th century
Silver, vermeil, dark blue, light blue, water green and orange red enamel; glass
33 x 23 cm
Signed : Roukhomovsky - PARIS
Composed in the manner of a Greek temple facade, of a frons scenae, this mirror is decorated with silver cherubs on a blue enamel background. The upper part draws an entablature with triglyphs and metopes where small cherubs stand out. Two flowering amphorae, enamelled with red figures, furnish the lower corners in relief. The bottom of the mirror is animated by a frieze of dancing cherubs around a garland of roses. The mirror is framed by a turquoise net, topped by a winged love figure playing the pan flute on a heap of roses. Our Russian mirror bears the signature of the silversmith Israel Roukhomovsky (Mazyr, 1860 - Boulogne-Billancourt, 1936) who became famous for his Odessa tiara, acquired in 1896 by the Louvre Museum as an authentic antique work.
