CAVAGNOLE" GAME BOX France, 19th century rosewood; satinwood; amaranth or rosewood H. 19,5 cm, W. 20 cm, D. 20 cm This elegant game box with bottomless cubes marquetry, presents a complete Cavagnole game. A very fine object, it is composed of rectangular leather boards illustrated with a number, a red velvet bag containing circular tokens and a set of natural wood tokens placed in an ovoid container mounted on a natural wood pedestal. Ancestor of the lotto, the Cavagnole was very popular from the middle of the 18th century, especially in the South of France, and in the European Courts which imitated the fashion of Versailles. This game from Genoa - "cavagnola" meaning "little basket" in Italian - is a precious testimony of the habits and customs of the 18th century.
