PAIR OF FLAMPS France, Louis XIV period, circa 1700
Gilded bronzes
H. 39 cm, D. 20 cm
This very beautiful pair of gilt bronze torches has all the stylistic characteristics of the great Louis XIV taste, whose ornamentation refers to the iconographic repertoire of the great ornaments of this reign, Jean I Bérain (1640/1711).
The shaft is composed of several balusters with gadroons and a frieze of four masks of feathered women in the center. The binnacle is decorated with foliage. On the base are scrolls, shells and flowers in full underlined by a rosette border.
This model can be compared to the ones that belonged to the
Hubert de Givenchy collection, with a similar decoration of balusters and scrolls (fig.1).
