Portrait of Federico Confalonieri (?)
Oil on canvas, 106X81 cm
The portrait probably depicts the patriot Federico Confalonieri (1785-1846), member of a noble Milanese family and fervent supporter of Lombard independence against Austrian rule and of the Unification of Italy. In 1806 Confalonieri married Teresa Casati, an illustrious lady who shared her husband's ideals and whose name can be seen in the painting in an inscription on the wall behind the effigy. The work can be included in the strand of patriotic satire of the Risorgimento period.
