Trained with Simon de Valck and Jeronymus van Diest, De Venne devoted himself to various types of subjects, in particular interior scenes, historical and religious themes and landscapes. He also executed miniatures and grisaille decorations in shades of gray and brown, for which he was well known and in which he often portrayed the poor and crippled. The works of this last period have moralistic and social intentions.
