A pupil of Nicolaes Moeyaert, Does began his artistic career in Amsterdam and in 1644 was enrolled at the University of Leiden. In 1643 he made a trip to Italy via France. The following year he was in Rome where he remained until about 1649 and became a member of the Schildersbent under the nickname of Tamboer. Returning home, he moved to The Hague in 1650 where he devoted himself mainly to painting Italian landscapes and animals, especially sheep and goats, but also made portraits and architecture. During his stay in Rome he got to know the works of Pieter van Laer, by whom he was particularly influenced.
