Patented in 1855 by Jesse Butterfield of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), this revolver with military vocation was manufactured with approximately 640 specimens in 1861-62. Initially the army had contracted with Butterfield for 2250 units, but this contract was cancelled and only 640 were made.
