Ernst Carl Koerner, Stormy Sea off Alexandria. 1923. Ernst Carl Koerner1846 Stibbe - 1927 Berlin. Oil on canvas. Signed "Ernst Koerner" and dated u.r. Verso on the stretcher upper left inscribed in lead "Prof. Körner" and Mi. with the painting material dealer's stamp "Leopold Hess. Berlin". In a wide, black-brown profile frame with wickerwork decoration and golden trim. Not in WVZ Kosack, but cf. WVZ Kosack 383 "Vor Alexandria, Einsamer Segler auf bewegtem Meer vor der Küste und Oasensilhouette" (Leo Spik, Berlin, 1984). Small retouchings in the sky as well as especially u.r. in the sea.Verso canvas with water streaks. Small, expertly closed and retouched tear u.l. as well as next to it another closed hole in the waves. Age-related craquelure in pastosities of the painting layer. Minor abrasion of the painting layer in the area of the fold. The frame partly bumped and with small missing parts. Dimensions: 100.2 x 150.2 cm, overall 133.5 x 184.5 cm. Study trips to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, to the Harz Mountains, 1868 to the north of France, to Italy, England, 1872 to Scotland, 1873, 1874, 1878, 1886 and 1905 to Egypt and the Orient, 1882 to Spain. 1894 professor in Berlin. 1895-99 chairman of the Verein Berliner Künstler.
