Ermenegildo Carlo Donadini "Anton's an der Vogelwiese" (Dresden-Johannstadt). Probably 1912. Ermenegildo Carlo Donadini 1876 Vienna - 1955 Oil on painting cardboard. U.r. signed "Donadini jr." as well as place-inscribed "Dresden". Framed in a wide black lacquered wooden moulding with a golden visible border. Verso with another oil sketch as well as inscribed in lead (illegible) in Sütterlin "Mai" and with an address note "Hainstr. 2a...?", numbered in blue chalk "4224" as well as inscribed "Antons b.. Dresden". Verso u.r. in pencil probably by the artist's hand in Sütterlin "Age 36 years". Handwritten old title on the reverse of the frame as well as a note of ownership with the year "1953". The Vogelwiese, the oldest folk festival in the city of Dresden, changed its location in 1874 to the Johannstadt Elbe meadows in the current area of the Waldschlößchen Bridge. For this purpose, the archery society acquired some land near the "Antons" castle on the banks of the Elbe, which had previously been owned by the Dresden butchers' guild. The little castle Antons, built in 1754 and honoured by E.T.A. Hofmann in his art fairy tale "Der goldene Topf" (The golden pot) published in 1814, was at times a popular excursion restaurant and was later converted into an open-air swimming pool. It was destroyed by bombs during the Second World War. According to the note on the reverse, the present painting was probably created by the artist when he was 36 years old and thus shows an early painterly view of the now vanished structure. Minimally soiled.Corners and edges slightly bumped. A punctual bulge of the painting support u.m. recto o.l. as well as verso mi.r. a small tear, inherent to the work. Dimensions: 21.8 x 26 cm, marg. 34 x 38 cm. Ermenegildo Carlo Donadini 1876 Vienna - 1955 Pupil of the Dresden School of Applied Arts as well as of the Academy of Arts under Leon Pohle. Helped his father Ermenegildo Antonio Donadini with his restoration work. Painted battle scenes, animal paintings and portraits.
