David Teniers the Elder. (in the manner of), Pipe Smoker with Dog. Late 18th c. David Teniers theElder1582 Antwerp - 1649 ibid. Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Inscribed "T-30" on the verso of the canvas. Doubling and stretcher of the 19th century, the stretching edges with paper tape. Light age craquelure. Painting layer newly firnized, partially with light relief-like impression of bubble foil. At the lower margin at the cover edge small missing parts as well as inconspicuous spots of paint. Dimensions: 19.7 x 28.7 cm. David Teniers the Elder 1582 Antwerp - 1649 ibid. Flemish painter. Pupil of his elder brother, Juliaen. His sons, among others David Teniers the Younger and Abraham Teniers, also became painters. 1600 and 1605 stay in Rome, probably in contact with Adam Elsheimer and possibly his pupil. About 1605 return to Antwerp. 1606 Admitted as a freemaster to the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp. He was also active as an art dealer. At the beginning he worked on large church paintings, later he turned to landscape depictions as well as the fantastic and peasant genre.
