Frederik de Moucheron (periphery), Southern Landscape with Wanderers and Fishermen. 2nd half of 17th c. Frederik de Moucheron1633 Emden - 1686 Amsterdam. Oil on canvas. With remains of a signature (letter "M" recognizable) at the lower middle. Framed in a gold-coloured, historicizing ornamental frame with rocaille decorations and corner cartouches, there typographically inscribed "Frederik de Moucheron" on a metal label on the lower middle. With a written assessment by Ellis Dullaart, MA, RKD The Hague, dated 06/09/2018. Provenance: Gallery Dr. Schäffer. Old and New Master Paintings, Berlin W 8, Behrenstr. 28; Carl F. and Emma Müller Collection, Berlin, acquired 19.02.1927; Private Collection Berlin. Wax-doubled, on a new stretcher frame, edges of the original canvas trimmed all around. Painting layer with age craquelure as well as with small retouchings in the area of the sky and a cloud on the right. Surface with punctual brownish spots and small painting layer faults in the marginal area. Yellowed varnish, with a light varnish spot on the upper right, with a yellowish smudge on the upper centre and two scratches on the right. Dimensions: 116 x 93 cm, overall 135 x 114 cm. Frederik de Moucheron 1633 Emden - 1686 Amsterdam Frederik de Moucheron was of French origin, son of the painter Balthazar de Moucheron. His father is depicted in the family portrait of Pierre de Moucheron "Portrait of Pierre de Moucheron and his family" (Rijksmuseum SK-A-1537). Frederik studied with Jan Asselijn. In 1656 he travelled to France, where he spent three years. Afterwards he returned to Amsterdam. He painted mainly French, Italian and Dutch landscapes, in which his colleagues who specialized in figure painting, such as Adriaen van de Velde, Johannes Lingelbach and Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem, added the figures. Frederik's son Isaac was a student of Rembrandt and also a successful painter and engraver.
