Johann Christian Klengel, Shore Landscape with Sailing Boats at Full Moon. 1772 or 1774. Johann Christian Klengel1751 Kesselsdorf b. Dresden - 1824 Dresden. Oil on wood. Monogrammed "K." and indistinctly dated on the reverse. Verso old artist's inscription and numbered. In a broad gold-coloured and ornamented decorative frame with metal plate, artist's inscription on the lower right. On the verso of the frame a paper label with old artist's inscription and number. Not in the WVZ Fröhlich, but cf. motivically WVZ Fröhlich M 51. Inconspicuous small pressure marks in the upper half of the picture.Partly framing-related traces of pressure with slight abrasion. a tiny missing part of the painting layer on the upper right as well as a tiny scratch mark with loss of painting layer on the upper left. (not visible in framed condition). Retouching in the margins as well as in the area of the sky on the left and in spots on the right. The frame slightly bumped at the corners, partially with missing parts. Measures: 23.5 x 33.5 xm, overall 38.3 x 48 cm. Johann Christian Klengel 1751 Kesselsdorf b. Dresden - 1824 Dresden Bookbinder apprenticeship. Drawing lessons by Ch. Hutin. 1765-74 pupil of Chr. W. E. Dietrich, trained as a landscape painter. 1777 appointed member of the academy of arts in Dresden, 1786 honorary member of the academy of arts in Berlin. 1790-92 trip to Italy. From 1800 associate professor for landscape painting, 1816 changed to a full professorship.
