Andalusian school; second half of the 17th century. "Jesus and the daughter of Jairus". Oil on canvas. Re-tinted from the 19th century. It presents repainting and restorations. Measurements: 48,5 x 31,5 cm. This work narrates the biblical episode referred in the New Testament, which alludes to the miracle of Jesus and the daughter of Jairus. In the Gospel according to Saint Mark, Jesus is in the house of Jairus, after having cured his wife. At that moment, some men appear to tell Jairus that his daughter has died. After Jairus' dejection, Jesus tells him "Don't be afraid, just show faith", then Jesus and Jairus enter the house to see what has happened, when Jesus says "The girl is not dead, she is asleep". At first, these words are received with distrust, provoking the mockery of some of those present. Jesus then makes them leave the house, except for Peter, James, John, and the parents. Christ approaches the girl and whispers, "Little girl, I say to you: Arise (Tálitha cúmi), causing the girl to rise, which, according to the Gospels, is the second occasion on which Jesus raises a deceased person from the dead. In the foreground, Christ is standing with his hands raised in an active pose. To his left, the parents kneeling, imploring or grateful, and to the right, two of the apostles, probably Peter and James. In the background, on the bed, we can see Jairus' daughter, now risen from the dead.
