GREEN, Valentine. After Benjamin West The Death of Epaminondas. London John Boydell 1774 Mezzotint, 63 x 52 cm, thick laid paper, signed in the plate at bottom "V. Green Mezzotint Engraver to his Majesty fecit". Impressive print depicting the Theban general sitting outside his tent draped in a white cloth and wearing a helmet. Fainting back into the arms of his officers, his right hand on a spear-point which pierces his side, he is about to draw it out knowing that he will then die. Epaminondas is being assured of victory when soldiers on the left bring him his shield. Cicero eulogized him as "the first man of Greece".
