The collection of illustrated biographies derives its rank from the evaluation of hardly accessible sources, for the portraits indicated in each case. The collection covers deserving personalities of science, art, economy, public life. The biographical texts of the specialist authors are not abbreviated in shorthand, but give the information due space. That the appreciations are subordinated to the view of the time brings additional information - a fifth volume appeared in 1901 - covers rubbed and with wear, vol. 2 loosened.
