Harmen Jansz. Muller (1540-1617) - The Wise and Foolish Virgins - Groenning / Description: The complete series of four numbered plates showing the parable of the wise and foolish virgins after Gerard van Groeningen (New Hollstein 45-48), signed or monogrammed by Muller in the plate. Plate 1: The Wise Virgins. Interior of a room with several women engaged in different activities (playing music, reading and sewing), another playing organ in background and another dancing, two seated at a table in background. Plate 2: An Angel calling the Virgins. Landscape with several women asleep inside ruins, an angel playing the trumpet and waking them up at top centre. Plate 3: The five wise virgins light their lamps with some extra oil. The foolish virgins ask the wise virgins for oil, but there is not enough. In the background, two foolish virgins leave to buy oil. Plate 4: The five wise virgins, each with a burning oil lamp in hand, are welcomed at the door by the bridegroom. In the left background, the five foolish virgins get oil from a seller. On the right they knock in vain at the closed door, while the wedding supper is in progress upstairs. At the bottom in the margin an explanatory text in Latin. / Dimensions: 21,10 x 25,10 cm Good impressions with full palte border and wide margins in a full sheet of laid paper. Hardly visible faded stain in the central area. The margins somewhat soiled.in top condition on waterparked laid paper.
