Jacques Callot (1592-1635) - Les Supplices - The Tortures / Description: Various buildings surrounding a square within which all sorts of torture take place. We see gallows and the executioner's scaffold, and gmuch more .A rare early state of this spectacular etching considered as one of the masterpieces of the artst (Hussen, Bouchot...). It is on interlaced C watermarked laid paper as called for, for early impressions by the Callot. About the state, there are seven states know from this etching. The first two have the square tower in the background hardly visible. In the etching on auction the tower is so faint, it is almost invisible except a few traits. I found no comparable impression of this. It has already the last letter of 'Meschans' changed in a S instead of the t of the first state. Extremery rare state. / Dimensions: 11,50 x 21,80 cm Very good early impression on double C watermarked laid paper. Full plate border and margins. Small closed tear in top margin at left. Remains of hinges on the back of the top corners. / Literature: Focillon 642, Wilton-Ely 929 Harris 1964 / Goya: Engravings and Lithographs (50.III. 4-12) -- Delteil / Le Peintre-Graveur Illustré (XIXe et XXe siècles) (52) Etching
