Pierre Brebiette (attributed) - Venus on a sea horse with tritons and dolphin / Description: Frieze like composition unsigned but with the publishers address of Daman, a publisher with Italian roots who published in Paris around 1640-1650. Famous for his reprint of plates by Bisciano who's plates he acquired after his suden death. Published also work of Brebiette, this looks like one of those. No positive identification yet. / Dimensions: 13,00 x 36,00 cm A bit silvery impression with full plate border and small margin on watermarked French laid paper (bunch of grapes). Tiny tear near tho top margin at left. / Literature: Reference: Riggs 1977 128 New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) 251.I (The Van Doetecum Family) A first state before the number After the Praecipua aliquot Romanae antiquitatis ruinarum monimenta, vivis prospectibus, ad veri imitationem affabre designata published in 1551 there was an aditional series of 12 prints, one of them dated 1561 and a series on smaller scale with 20 prints dating from 1562. The repesentation of the human figures is in my eyes typical for Doeticum and noticable also in his landscape prints after Hans Bol. The series showed mostly Roman Ruins but also some elswhere in Europe, like the theatre of Bordeaux.
