Genre Scene 42 × 68,5 cm Oil on canvas Egbert van Heemskerck mainly painted genre scenes in the tradition of Haarlem painters, most notably Adriaen van Ostade and Adriaen Brouwer. A soldier and two men sit around a barrel in a peasant bar. The soldier and the man on the left turn to a man entering from the right side of the painting, who takes off his hat in greeting. He wears an elegant doublet and a chain around his neck. In the background on the left, a man with a pipe is sitting by the fireplace, probably to light a fire. The man seated to the right looks out of the image at the viewer. Another man in the background turns his back on us. Monogrammed HK Private collection
